Brief
Biographies of the Authors
Wallace Delois Wattles (1860–1911) was an early American success
writer who became widely popular in the New Thought and
self-help movement. Although he wrote many books and articles
and was a popular speaker on the lecture circuit, most of what
we know about his personal life came from the writings of his
daughter.Wattles'
best known work is the 1910 book, The
Science of Getting Rich, in which he explained how to
become wealthy. He claimed to have personally tested the
principles he described. They apparently worked, for although
he had lived most of his life in poverty, in his later years
he was a prosperous man.
Russell
Herman Conwell (1843–1925) was an American Baptist minister,
lawyer, writer, and outstanding orator. He is best remembered
as the founder and first president of
Temple
University
in
Philadelphia
Pennsylvania
, and for his lecture and book, Acres
of Diamonds. Conwell studied law at the
Albany
Law
School
and became a lawyer. He was a reporter for the Boston Evening
Traveller, writing for them on civil war battlefields and then
on an around-the-world trip on which he was inducted into the
Chinese Freemasons.
James Allen (1864-1912) was a British philosophical writer, known for
his inspirational books and poetry. Allen's books illustrate
the use of the power of thought to increase personal
capabilities. Although he never achieved great fame or wealth
in his lifetime, his works continue to influence people around
the world.Allen's most famous book, As a Man Thinketh, was published in 1902. It is now considered a
classic self-help book. Its underlying premise is that noble
thoughts make a noble person, while lowly thoughts make a
miserable person.
